INTRODUCTION NAMLS is a series of international conferences organized to promote the development and application of nuclear and related analytical methods in the life sciences. The most recent conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal, in September 2008. Previous conferences were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2005); Antalya, Turkey (2002); Beijing, China (1998); Prague, Czech Republic (1993); Gaithersburg, USA (1989); Vienna, Austria (1978); Bled, Slovenia (1972); and Amsterdam, Netherlands (1967). The first three conferences were convened and organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). All subsequent conferences have been convened by the NAMLS International Committee in cooperation with the IAEA. The next conference, NAMLS-10, will be hosted by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology and will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 22 to 27 January 2012. Conference topics cover all types of neutron, photon and charged particle activation analysis that can be used in the life sciences; emphasis is placed on instrumental (INAA) and radiochemical (RNAA) neutron activation analysis. Related analytical techniques, which also fall within the conference scope, include particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE), energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). Relevant applications of these methods focus on studies of trace elements - both essential and toxic ones - and their roles in biology, medicine, agriculture, food sciences, nutrition and health-related environmental sciences. HEVESY MEDAL AWARD The Hevesy Medal Award is the premier international award of excellence honouring outstanding achievements in radioanalytical and nuclear chemistry. It is named after George de Hevesy (1885-1966), who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1943 for his work on the use of isotopes as tracers in the study of chemical processes. Click here for general information on this award including a complete list of all medallists between 1968 and 2010. Many of the distinguished scientists who have been honoured by this award have worked on topics that fall within the scope of NAMLS. Seven of the recent recipients of the award, including the 2007 medallist, are current or former members of the NAMLS International Committee. Two of the recent NAMLS Conferences (Antalya, 2002 and Rio de Janeiro, 2005) were both selected as venues for the award ceremonies. In 2010 the Medal was awarded to Darleane C. HOFFMAN, USA. Click here to view the announcment. The call for nominations for the 2011 Award was issued in April 2010. For more information click here to view the announcement, and here to view the guidelines. The deadline for nominations is 2010 October 15. This website is maintained by: Last update: 2010-07-16 Site visits since 2010 June 22 |
